The Colosseum

The Colosseum

A symbol of Rome and the Roman Empire, the Colosseum stands to this day as one of the city’s top attractions. Originally built under Vespasian’s rule and finished under Titus, the Colosseum was known as the Flavian Amphitheatre which had a capacity of over 50,000 spectators. It used to be the place for exotic animal exhibitions, prisoner executions, battle recreations, and gladiator fights. With the last recorded games in the 6th century, the Colosseum was an active events place for over 500 years. Since then, it has been witness to various lootings, earthquakes, burials, storage use, and bombings, especially during World War 2. Currently, it is Rome’s most visited tourist site with about 6 million tourists every year. Because of this, the best way to avoid the crowds is to book a guided tour and schedule it in the morning.
